Workshop Overview

Neurons are fascinating cells found throughout our bodies. These cells form a huge network that constitutes the human nervous system. They are the functional units of the nervous system. They allow us to experience life to its fullest. We can walk, shout, smell, feel emotions, etc. because of neurons. In this workshop we will be learning about this type of cell, how it functions to transmit information from one part of the human body to another and what role it plays in everyday living. Below is a detailed outline of this day workshop.

8:30am - Registration and Networking (Refreshments)

9:00 - 9:45am Overview of the nervous system
In this session, we will be overviewing the organization of the human nervous system and its significance. The anatomy of the neuron will also be covered.

10:00am - 10:45am The plasma membrane, transporters and molecular driving forces.
We will be learning about the role that the plasma membrane plays in maintaining molecular balance across the various body fluid compartments. The underlying physiological mechanisms that maintain this balance will be explored during this session. Particular emphasis will be on the plasma membrane constituents and the forces that drive molecular movement across the cell membrane.

11:00 - 11:45am The resting membrane potential
We will work to get a deep and clear understanding of how the resting membrane potential develops across the plasma membrane.

12:00 - 1pm Networking and luncheon.

1:00 to 1:45pm – The action potential
In this session, we will cover the molecular generation of the action potential after being triggered by the summation of many graded potentials including inhibitory post-synaptic potential (IPSP) and excitatory post-synaptic potential (EPSP).

2:00 -2:45pm Conduction velocity
The basic components of an electrical circuit will be defined, integrated and applied to the neuron. This will aid in the understanding of differing conduction velocities. We will cover salutatory and continuous conduction velocities.

3:00 - 3:45pm Practice exam
In this session, we will be following exam conditions while performing a sample exam. The exam will contain practice short answer questions and multiple-choice questions. Your exam will be marked and returned to you with some feedback.

4:00 - 4:30pm Networking (Refreshments and light fare)
